Abstract

The authors describe how tape diagrams created in GeoGebra can be used to foster critical thinking about multiplicative relationships in proportional situations. They describe multiple iterations of applet development and the rationale for various modifications.

S. Asli Ozgun-Koca, Ph.D., is a Professor and Program Coordinator of Mathematics Education at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Her research interests include the use of technology in mathematics education and mathematics teacher education.

Michael Todd Edwards, Ph.D., is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His professional interests include the use of writing as a tool to promote mathematical thinking at all levels of instruction.

Michael Meagher

Michael Meagher, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Department Chairperson at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York. His research interests include the use of technology in mathematics education and teacher education.
